| LA ABDICACION
DE O'HIGGINS
La abdicación
adquiere sus relieves más dramáticos cuando,
en el transcurso de la reunión entre O'Higgins
y el patriciado, en el mismo salón del Consulado
desde un 18 de septiembre se constituyera la primera
Junta de Gobierno, de entre los congregados surge, a
la sordina, la voz que incita a su asesinato: "
....la cesarina, la cesarina...".

El
Director Supremo, que en los momentos de peligro se engrandecía,
a tales expresiones amenazantes replicó con entereza:
"No me atemorizan ni los gritos
sediciosos ni las amenazas. Desprecio hoy la muerte como la
he despreciado en el campo de batalla. Si queréis discutir
la situación del país y buscar el remedio que
conviene adoptar, designad algunos individuos respetables
con quienes pueda seguir tratando tan graves asuntos".
Después de conversar con los citados representantes,
decidió sacrificar su alta investidura y renunciar
al cargo de Director Supremo.
Tan pronto como se conoció su resolución de
que asumiera el poder una junta gubernativa integrada por
Agustín de Eyzaguirre, José Miguel Infante y
Fernando Errázuriz, a quienes el propio O'Higgins tomó
de inmediato el juramento de rigor. Se dirigió a la asamblea en frases que se han hecho inolvidables por su desinterés,
patriotismo, y valentía, para luego alejarse, rumbo
al ostracismo primero y, enseguida, al reconocimiento de sus
compatriotas y posterior inmortalidad.

THE
ABDICATION OF O'HIGGINS
The abdication acquired its more dramatic
characteristics when, in the course of the meeting between
O'Higgins and the aristocracy, from between congregated it
arises a voice that urges his murder.
It is remarkable to notice that this meeting was held in the
same place in which the First Governing body was constituted.
The Supreme Director, whose character enlarged at the moments
of danger, hardly replied "neither
the seditious shouts nor the threats frighten to me. I scorn
death today , as I have despised it in the battlefield. If
you want to discuss the situation of the country and to look
for the remedy that agrees to adopt, you must designate some
respectable individuals with whom I can continue treating
so serious subjects. "
After talking with the representing mentioned ones, he decided
to sacrifice his high investiture and to resign to the position
of Supreme Director. As soon as his resolution was known,
assumed the power a governmental meeting integrated by Agustín
de Eyzaguirre, Jose Miguel Infante and Fernando Errázuriz,
to whom the own O'Higgins took the oath of rigor. |

addressed the assembly with phrases that have become unforgettable
by his disinterestedness, patriotism and bravery, soon to
move course away to the ostracism first and, immediately,
to the recognition of his patriotic ones, and later immortality |
